RSPB Albatross Campaign
Every year, long-line fishing kills 100,000 albatrosses. This carnage is having
a devastating impact on albatross populations across the world. Entire species of
albatross are threatened with extinction as a direct result of long-line fishing.
Two websites (below) explain the problem with video clips, activities and actions
that pupils can take - either raising awareness, funds or making careful shopping
choices. A good link showing how our interdependence and influence biodiversity.

Albatross Adventure Game
Download a game for pupils. Playing the game helps you to understand the dangers
faced by albatross and why 19 of the world's 21 species of albatross are facing
extinction.

RSPB Asian Vultures Appeal
Three of southern Asia's vulture species have declined by more than 97% since the
early 1990s. This shocking decline is because of a veterinary drug, diclofenac,
which is toxic to any vulture that feeds on the corpse of recently treated cattle.
Find out more about how the vultures are being protected and how the balance of
the Asian eco-system is at risk.

Wildsquare is an exciting project that you, your family, school or your group can
take part in. Choose a one kilometre square area near where you live (it can contain

exciting surveys and other activities you can do in your square, using the RSPB
Wildlife Explorer web pages. There will be indoor and outdoor activity sheets to
do throughout the year plus extra surveys that we will announce through the news
update page.

Practical Action
Presentations, notes and case study
Preserving biodiversity (seed fairs in Kenya)
Modern agriculture often uses just one or two varieties of high-yielding crops,
and these may be developed far from the country they will be used in. This lack
of diversity means there is a danger that these varieties will not survive as climate
change alters the environment. Seed fairs in Kenya are helping to preserve traditional
varieties of plants, often much better suited to local conditions, and maintain
a healthy biodiversity in the changing climate.
Potatoes in Peru (using traditional varieties)
Climate change in the Andes is resulting in more severe winters. Traditional varieties
of potatoes are better able to withstand the climate than those developed elsewhere.
Practical Action has helped local people to grow and propagate the traditional varieties
to improve their food security.
