GREEN FLAG RESOURCES

The resources have been developed for use by a range of ages and abilities of pupils but please feel free to adapt them to suit your needs. Each lesson or 'set' of resources includes a 'Teachers' food for thought' section. This provides some background information for you, as a teacher starting to deliver activities with a global dimension.

The 'Teachers' food for thought' should provide you with a context to place the work in, ideas on how to organise the activities, places to do further background reading about issues you are unfamiliar with and ideas to share and discuss with your pupils to ensure they get the most out of the activities.

Resource Summary	This activity aims to take a familiar point of reference for pupils (the journey to school) and expand it to look at how children travel to school in other countries. They consider how methods of transport used depend on factors, such as climate, topography, wealth, etc. and take part in a challenge to design a sustainable form of transport suitable for different countries.

Name of the activity or resource	Wheels go round the world
Resource Summary	Bicycles and pedal power are used around the world for a whole range of uses. Focusing on: Bikes to collect recyclable materials in Mexico Wooden bikes in Tanzania and Rwanda Bicycles for health workers in Uganda Recycled bikes for women and farmers in Uganda Bicycle ambulances and paramedics in the UK A whole host of ideas, suggestions and activities can be developed including photo work, literacy projects and drama.

Name of the activity or resource	Bio-fuels - Climate Saviour of Global Menace?
Resource Summary	Examining the two faces of bio-fuels; as a solution to carbon emissions and potential to provide sustainable transport versus fuel instead of food, putting pressure on global food supplies, land and habitats. The activities and resources help pupils to compare different bio-fuel issues from countries around the world and examine their positive and negative aspects from an economic, social and environmental outlook.

Name of the activity or resource	Travel and Transport Global Literacy
Resource Summary	This activity uses the idea of developing a transport case study about a particular country and using it to develop a culturally appropriate story/poem/song. Here the congestion and pollution problem in Athens is transposed into a Greek Myth, and transport in France into a song.

Name of the activity or resource	The Art of Travel and Road Safety
Resource Summary	Developed by Derbyshire County Council's Travel Plan team with schools across Derbyshire, this calendar provides artwork based on a mode of travel typical of different parts of the world, with an artistic style associated with a particular country, and provides a message about sustainable and safe road travel. Additional ideas are included on how to further-develop this 'global' transport theme.

Name of the activity or resource	Travel the World with Travel Smart
Resource Summary	This set of resources, developed by Derbyshire County Council's Travel Plan Team, encourages children to travel to school more sustainably, building up their 'travel smart' miles into a journey around the world. Including an assembly presentation to introduce the project, animals from around the world to represent different journey styles (Walk with Blu the Gnu who migrates across Africa, etc), a spreadsheet to calculate miles and a school journey Carbon Dioxide Calculator. This provides a great way to measure your school's smart travel improvements and have a global dimension.
